WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT CHURCH?

An independent church is a group of believers in Jesus Christ who holds to the historic Christian Faith.  During the early 1900's many churches began to deny truths presented in the Bible.  As a result, leaders and laymen formed new churches not connected with any denomination.  They often began with home Bible classes or small Sunday schools. 

An independent church such as ours is not affiliated with any denomination and is therefore goverened by its own constitution and the church government which the constitution sets forth. 

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR DISTINCTIONS OF CALVARY CHURCH?

The major distinctions are its emphasis on the worship of God.  Its practical teaching of the Word of God, providing fellowship and reaching out to the community.  An independent church emphasizes the Bible as the only way to know Jesus Christ, God's Son, and come to understand the purpose and meaning of life.  We believe that the church and family need each other.  Because of that, we believe we have a great deal of value to the community.  In a day of complex issues and family problems, we believe we can play an important role in the development of the family and indivdual family members.

WHAT ACTIVITIES DOES CALVARY CHURCH HAVE?

Calvary Independent Church offers a variety of ministries through Sunday School, Awana Youth Clubs, children and adult choirs, youth programs, etc.  which are coordinated by a large staff of caring adults who love children and adults. 

WHEN DID CALVARY CHURCH START?

The roots of Calvary Independent Church go back to 1912 when a Sunday School was started in the public school building in East New Castle.  In 1920 a building was erected and the church joined a denomination.  Because the denomination began to deny the truth of the BIble, the church became independent in 1938.  A new church building was erected on Vogan Street in East New Castle and the name of the church was "Calvary Gospel Tabernacle."  In 1955 the church changed its name to Calvary Inedependent Church and purchased property on Moody Avenue.
